Steel Fibre Reinforcing
Practical, Economical & Tough
Steel fibre reinforcing has been used in Europe for decades to economically toughen concrete floors, in a practical manner, against the stresses created by applied loads and internal drying stress. Steel fibre comes in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit any application (from floors to shotcrete walls) - but beware, all fibres are NOT created equal.

There is no common standard configuration for steel fibres. Each manufacturer makes a particular configuration which produces it's own unique performance. Fibres come in a variety of lengths (30 mm to 60 mm), in different cross sections (round wire, crescent & slit sheet) with different anchorage (hooked end, wavy & pinched end) and dosage rates (15kgs/m3 or 25lbs/yd3 to 45kgs/m3 or 75lbs/yd3). A specified design with one type of fibre must not be substituted for another fibre - the floor must be redesigned in order to avoid potential disasters.

Designing concrete floor slabs has traditionally resembled a black art, in that designers rarely use the same methods, or arrive at the same results, when calculating slab thickness, compressive strength, subgrade support and the required amount of steel reinforcing for a given set of loading conditions. Steel fibre designs are much more refined. We explore all the load conditions from the quality of the granular base up through the spacing of the rack legs, base plate size and forklift wheel pressures to arrive at an optimal design to maximize performance and minimize the cost of each floor slab.

Steel fibres are mixed into the ready mix concrete trucks at the job site after the concrete mix has been inspected and adjusted using a plasticizing agent to our rigid batch requirements. Steel fibre is them mixed in the truck for 5 minutes prior to deposit to obtain uniformity. Concrete is then deposited normally and finished using specialized methods to minimize the appearance of fibres on the surface of the finished slab.

Duron has been designing and installing steel fibre floors since 1984 and have completed countless manufacturing plants and warehouse floors across Canada and The United States. We would be pleased to share our knowledge and experience with you on your next project. Please EMAIL us for further information.
