New and existing reinforced concrete structures must be protected from the severe attack of road salts on reinforcing steel. Traffic toppings are selected and designed on the basis of the amount of traffic exposure, desired service life, thickness and weight. Each system provides protection against salt migration into the concrete and has inherent strengths and weaknesses that require careful consideration.
| Advantages: | Disadvantages: | |
| Epoxy/Urethane: | - Lightweight (2 psf)
- Available all year round. - Chemical resistance. - Many colours available. - Very thin (3mm). | - Requires double layer for heavy traffic.
- Most Expensive product. - Can not embed heat cables. - Can not be used to create slopes. - Requires 10 degree C installation temperature minimum. |
| Mastic: | - Medium weight (8 psf).
- Double layered waterproof protection. - Resistant to abrasion. - Available all year round. - Less expensive than epoxy systems. - Can embed heat cables. - Relatively thin (12mm). | - Requires double layer for exposed deck conditions.
- Subject to softening with prolonged exposure to petroleum products |
| Asphalt: |
- The least expensive system.
- resistant to abrasion (good for snow plow traffic). - Suitable for direct UV exposure. - Can be used for heat cable installations. |
- Asphalt wearing course NOT waterproof.
- May require periodic re-sealing. - Not available in winter months. - Subject to softening with prolonged exposure to petroleum products. - Requires the use of bi-level drains. - High weight (15-25 psf) - may not be suitable for some existing garage decks. - Greater thickness - may impede allowable height clearance. |
| Concrete: |
- Resistant to abrasion (good for snow plow traffic). - Suitable for direct UV exposure. - Suitable for the heaviest of traffic. - Can be used for heat cable installations. - The most durable solution. - Can be sloped. - Can be coloured. |
- The most expensive system.
- Embedded reinforcing may corrode over time. - Requires periodic sealing of surface and joints. - Not recommended during winter months. - Subject to staining. - Requires the use of bi-level drains. - Highest weight (>50 psf) - may not be suitable for some existing garage decks. - Greatest thickness - may impede allowable height clearance. |
